The super PAC explained that they felt the money could be better spent ramping up existing canvassing efforts in early nominating states.
On Wednesday, officials from the pro-Ron DeSantis Never Back Down super PAC announced that they had ended their door-knocking campaigns in a number of Super Tuesday states, including Nevada, California, North Carolina, and Texas.
While the move has been interpreted by some as a sign that the Florida governor's support is weakening, the super PAC explained that they felt the money could be better spent to ramp up existing canvassing efforts in early nominating states, which include Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.
"We want to reinvest in the first three," Never Back Down spokesperson Erin Perrine told NBC News. "We see real opportunities in the first three. The first three are going to set the conditions for the March states."
Many of the staffers who were employed in the Super Tuesday states have since moved to the early nominators, with more expected to follow in the coming weeks. That being said, the group has stated that it will maintain political teams in all nominating states until the end of March.
As NBC News reports, the pro-DeSantis super PAC also suggested that certain states had tried to enact policies that were advantageous to Donald Trump. In Nevada, for example, the state Republicans have gone to court to fight for a party-run primary as opposed to a state-run option pushed by Democrats.
Perrine referred to Nevada GOP Chairman Michael McDonald as a "Trump puppet," slamming him over the push to revert to the old primary system which would see the nominee chosen by many members who previously exhibited allegiance to the former president.
"When you have that kind of uncertainty about how the election's going to be conducted, that becomes a pretty unstable environment to be investing the kind of resources that we’re investing," she explained.
Similar complaints were made about California.
The Florida governor is currently polling at around 15 percent, well behind Trump, who has maintained a 50 percent average.
On the heels of Never Back Down's decision, it has been revealed that another super PAC, Ron to the Rescue, has ceased operations altogether.
The group's founder, John Thomas, announced that he was shutting things down over DeSantis' "rookie sh*t mistakes," and backing Trump instead.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
