Director defends ‘Cuties’ film that hyper-sexualizes children by claiming it’s ‘feminist’

Doucoure appeared at the panel of French filmmakers yesterday partially to explain and defend the series, claiming that it was done from a “feminist” perspective, and designed to sound the alarm about how children are currently sexualized. She said she wanted to raise awareness about this problem in society.

“It’s bold, its feminist, but it’s so important and necessary to create debate and try to find solutions, for me as an artist, for politicians and parents. It’s a real issue,” Doucoure stated during the panel, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s because I saw so many things and so many issues around me lived by young girls, that I decided to make this film and sound an alarm and say, ‘We need to protect our children,'”

The series has caused massive problems at Netflix, due to a #CancelNetflix campaign that was initiated because of “Cuties”. The viewing public and several prominent celebrities had a severe negative reaction to the poster for the movie and several clips that were circulating, showing girls dressed in very revealing clothes and dancing in a sexually suggestive manner.

“We’re deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for ‘Cuties.’ It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which premiered at Sundance. We’ve now updated the pictures and description,” a spokesperson for Netflix said in a press release.

The representative went on to call the series “a social commentary against the sexualization of young children. It’s an award winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up – and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.”

None of this has stopped Netflix shares from plunging in the market, however, due to so many people voting with their feet and cancelling their subscriptions to the streaming service.

The mainstream media has definitely taken the side of Netflix and Doucoure during this whole controversy. Many media outlets have claimed that people are overreacting to the film’s content.
