An explosion at a hash oil manufacturer in Los Angeles injured 11 firefighters battling a blaze inside a Little Tokyo-area factory after reports of a fire.
The explosion injured firefighters, and damaged the firetruck across the street.
Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott told the Associated Press that the explosion shook the L.A. neighbourhood at around 6:30 pm, with flames reaching over 30 feet high.
"The was one of the worst scenes I've seen," said Scott, describing the massive explosion as being as loud as a jet engine.
The 11 firefighters are now recovering from burns varying from minor to serious. Three firefighters were listed in critical condition. Two are on ventilators. All are expected to survive.
"The good news is everybody's going to make it," said Mayor Eric Garcetti to media.
The fire department was called to the factory after a report of a fire. The blaze seemed to be manageable, until the explosion took place, which created smoke that was visible for miles across Los Angeles.
Over 200 firefighters were called to the scene, to which the blaze was put out within an hour.
