Disgraced former FBI attorney Kevin Clinesmith was given what critics are calling a mere slap on the wrist for altering an email which led to the continuance of the Russiagate investigation.
Clinesmith was given 12 months of probation and 400 hours of community service for his role in tampering with evidence in order to keep up FBI surveillance of Carter Page, who had worked for the Trump campaign in 2016.
According to Politico, the opinion offered by the presiding judge, James Boasberg, was that Clinesmith had acted in good faith (which was what Clinesmith himself claimed as he entered his guilty plea) and that he didn't find any malicious intent in Clinesmith's actions:
"My view of the evidence is that Mr. Clinesmith likely believed that what he said about Mr. Page was true. By altering the email, he was saving himself some work and taking an inappropriate shortcut."
At this point, Clinesmith has been the only person charged in what is still considered to be an ongoing investigation into widespread FBI misconduct regarding the matter of this large-scale investigation by federal authorities which amounted to absolutely nothing.
