LAPD police union demands NBA launch investigation into LeBron James’ Columbus cop tweet
Union Director Detective Jamie McBride says LeBron incited violence, and urges NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to see if he violated league policies.
Union Director Detective Jamie McBride says LeBron incited violence, and urges NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to see if he violated league policies.

Following the shooting death of Ma'Khia Bryant by a Columbus police officer who intervened in her attempt to stab another girl, NBA star LeBron James put out a tweet with the image of the police officer, accompanied by the words "YOU'RE NEXT #ACCOUNTABILITY."
As established by the body camera footage and neighborhood surveillance cameras, Columbus Police Officer Nicholas Reardon made a snap decision to shoot Bryant as she lunged at someone with a knife.
LeBron's tweet appeared to be referring to ex-cop Derek Chauvin having recently been found guilty in the trial over George Floyd’s death.
According to Fox News, Detective Jamie McBride told Laura Ingraham on Fox News that his police union (Los Angeles Protective League) sent a letter to NBA commissioner Adam Silver to demand an investigation into whether or not LeBron James violated league policies in his targeting of Officer Nicholas Reardon.
Detective Jamie McBride described LeBron James as a hypocrite: "LeBron James has talked time and time again about police officers and how bad, they’re all killers. However, they're also doing protection at his house. Off-duty officers provide security for him and his family. So you have killers at his house providing security for him."
McBride accused James of inciting violence for putting out that type of inflammatory message to nearly fifty million followers.
After a wave of public backlash, the NBA star deleted the tweet. In an explanation he said it was “being used to create more hate.” Twitter came out to deny judgement as to whether or not James broke any rules, as the tweet was deleted too quickly for staff to take action.
But the condemnation still followed LeBron. NFL legend Marcellus Wiley shared his disappointment about how the basketball star used his public platform. A police officer from Bellevue, Idaho was suspended without pay for making a TikTok video acting out what it'd be like if all cops had to get approval from LeBron James during work hours.
At the beginning of April, LeBron James was ridiculed on Twitter for his support of the MLB’s All-Star game boycott of Georgia. People pointed out LeBron’s seemingly tight-knit relationship with the Chinese. An ongoing response ever since the basketball player defended China in October 2019, in the midst of comments made by Daryl Morey supporting Hong Kong protesters.
