View on RumbleAccording to PIX11, the fight broke out at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and West 30th Street "at the height of the morning rush hour," and was caught on camera.
"They were in the middle of the street, and what brought the attention was everybody was shooting with their cellphones," a security guard who witnessed the attack said. "I turned, to walk in this direction," he added, pointing away from the street, "and that’s when ... everybody reacts, and when I turned back, he was bleeding out of his chest."
The guard went on to lament the fact that for many New Yorkers, witnessing such behavior has "almost become the norm."
"I see it every day. Just look around? It's disgusting," he said.
First responders arrived on scene shortly after and transported the victim to Bellvue Hospital, however, police announced that he passed away less than an hour later.
Graves was arrested and appeared in court on Saturday. He is currently being held without bail.
As ABC7 reports, Graves had served nine years in prison for the attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl, however those who knew him said he didn't tend to have violent tendencies.
"I have never seen him be aggressive," the guard's colleague said, adding that Graves had been living on the block three years ago and had since received help from people in the neighborhood.
Graves' current address was listed as a transitional housing facility in the Bowery.
