Despite orders to the contrary, thousands of people gathered in one of Amsterdam's main squares Sunday to demand an end to the nationwide COVID-19 lockdowns.
The protestors gathered with the storied Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum in the background to voice their discontent for the new lockdown measures enacted in December of 2020.
According to Reuters, the protest was applied for and denied by officials, but many people decided to show up anyway, and refused to leave when police arrived to disperse them. Reportedly, some threw fireworks at the police.
At that point, the police brought out water cannons which were used to disperse the disgruntled crowd who were demanding their freedom.
The Dutch government, prompted by rapidly dwindling hospital capacities, brought the new measures into effect, which included closing schools and most commercial establishments.
The lockdown was supposed to expire this week, but the government has just extended it for another three weeks time.
