View on XThe article in question, written by Kali Holloway, claims in the title that the non-white speakers at last night, the second night of the RNC’s proceedings, were all “tokens”. An exact quote:
“Nicholas Sandmann was one of the night's stars, but no GOP event would be complete without token minorities to absolve the party of its race-baiting and appeals to white grievance.”
The Daily Beast article lamentably doesn’t actually tackle this burning issue, aside from alluding to it at the very beginning. Their article largely focuses on Nicholas Sandmann, the Kentucky high school student who recently won a big settlement with major media outlets due to his unfair by them. Sandmann was last night’s keynote speaker.
We can possibly speculate that they were possibly referring to two speakers scheduled for tonight’s stage of the rally:
Clarence Henderson, a famous civil rights activist from the 1960s and an outspoken supporter of the Republican party; and Burgess Owens, who is currently in the race for a Utah congress seat and is running as a Republican against the incumbent Democrat. He also is a former professional athlete who played for the NFL and also used to be a commentator for Fox News.
The speakers, whatever their skin tone may be, are expected to address timely issues such as the difference between peaceful and violent protests, and the rights of athletes to not kneel during the national anthem.
This isn’t the first time that the media has lashed out at the RNC and its speakers in bizarre ways. Another recent article claimed that people speaking at the convention “wanted to say the N word”.
