Michigan’s elections board voted Monday to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the state. This avoids any stalemate or delay as three of four board members called it their “legal duty” to act. This is according to USA Today.
The Board of State Canvassers, made up of two Democrats and two Republicans, voted 3-0 to certify results that show Biden defeating President Donald Trump by 154,187 votes in Michigan. One Republican board member abstained to vote.
The three hour process was viewed by almost 30,000 people via a YouTube livestream. What is normally a mundane task was held to high regard this election season, due to the allegations of voter fraud.
“We must not attempt to exercise power we don't have,” said Aaron Van Langevelde, a Republican member of the state canvassing board. He continued, “We have a clear legal duty to certify the results of the election." The other Republican board member chose to abstain from the vote entirely.
Jonathan Brater, director of the Michigan Bureau of Elections, told the board that no evidence showed widespread irregularities in Michigan including in Detroit. Brater even called it an “extremely well run and secure election." This is definitive conclusion for the state and the bureau.
Nonetheless, President Trump and the Republicans are alleging fraud and continue to press on. Attorney Rudy Giuliani has stated that certified results may be un-certified once the evidence is put in place and the law falls in Trump's favour.
Lawsuits are now underway, and it remains to be seen whether they make any difference to the end result.
