On Saturday, Gen. Mark Milley gave an interview at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, where he talked about probable outcomes within the nation of Afghanistan now that the US has completely pulled its troops out.
The often-controversial Gen. Milley commented that he felt that Al Qaeda could be "reconstituted" by the vacuum of power created, as it appears the Taliban is not as victorious in the whole country is it would like to be.
"I personally think that — my military estimate is that the conditions are likely to develop of a civil war. I don’t know if the Taliban is going to be able to consolidate power and establish governance."
"I think there's at least a very good probability of a broader civil war and that will then, in turn, lead to conditions that could, in fact, lead to a reconstitution of al-Qaeda or a growth of ISIS or other myriad of terrorist groups."
There is also widespread concern about the practice of child marriage coming back to Afghanistan in the wake of the US withdrawal from the region, as well as that of terrorists disguising themselves as refugees and obtaining entry into US territory. Milley commented on the latter, saying that he feels that there are enough checks in the system to make him feel confident:
"I think they said a couple of hundred [refugees] … popped red. Once the individual comes out as red, something is up. Then they go into an individual room and start interviewing with FBI, CID, NCIS, those sorts of folks. And then they work through whatever the issues were."
