In Chicago, a Democrat-led city that has been plagued with violence, more children have been shot than have died of COVID-19 in the United States in 2021.
In 2021 so far, 214 minors under the age of 18 have died of the coronavirus across America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the CDC and the American Association of Pediatrics, children made up just 0 percent to 0.27 percent of all coronavirus deaths in the states reporting data, with seven states reporting zero child deaths.
In comparison, Chicago police told Fox 32 Chicago that at least 261 juveniles have been shot in the city this year so far. 41 of the child victims passed away due to the fatal injuries sustained, authorities reported.
According to Outkick, more children have died from shootings in Chicago than children across Illinois have died from COVID-19. It is reported that just 15 children have died due to COVID-19 in the state since the pandemic began.
Just over the long Labor Day weekend, 63 residents were shot, including eight children, according to Fox News. Six victims died due to gun shot injuries sustained, including four-year-old Mychal Moultry Jr. who was shot in the head on Friday in a drive-by shooting while he getting his hair braided in an apartment.
Angela Gregg, the boy's mother, told the Chicago Tribune that she does not know of a motive, "but we just know our baby is not supposed to lose his life at 4 years old, and somebody needs to step up and say something."
"The police don't know anything yet because no one is talking. No one is coming forward," the grieving mother said. "People aren't answering their doors, and the people that are answering their doors are saying they don't know anything … Somebody in Chicago knows something."
On Monday, Chicago Police Superintendent David O. Brown pleaded with the criminals carrying out these crimes, questioning: "Why are you continuing to be around young people, our children?"
"You're harming this community. You're harming these families," Brown added in the remarks. "And we will be relentless in pursuing you as an offender."
