This makes being overweight the second biggest factor for having a bad outcome from the virus, right after one's age, according to the study, which involved medical experts from over 50 obesity centers all over the world.
Out of the 2.5 million people approximately who have died of the virus, 2.2 million of them have come from countries where there are high rates of obesity.
In the US, for example at least half of the whole population of the country is at least overweight. In the UK, where the death rate is the third-highest in the world, the obesity rate is the fourth-highest.
On the other side of the coin, no countries in which less than 40 percent of the population has a weight problem had high death rates from the virus.
Perhaps even more alarmingly, another similar study released in February of 2021 suggests that the Pfizer COVID vaccine may be not as effective on obese people. The study found that the obese produced on average about 50 percent of the antibodies as did people within a normal weight range.
