Online scammers pit Uber driver against elderly man in Ohio, who shoots her after threatening phone calls, fake Uber request

Apparently, William Brock and Lo-Letha Hall were both victims of a scam, the former having been contacted and threatened by the alleged scammers and the latter receiving a notification from the same crew instructing her to retrieve a package from his doorstep.

According to the Springfield News-Sun, the incident took place shortly after 11 am on March 25 outside Brock's home on South Chesterton-Clifton Road. Dashcam footage showed Hall getting out of the car and slowly making her way up to Brock's front door, at which point he confronted her and ushered her back down to the vehicle, brandishing a pistol as he did so.

Hall cried for help and said she'd call 911, and when she tried to get into her vehicle, Brock fired a single shot, striking her in the leg. A struggle ensued, during which Brock hit his head on the door. He shot her a second time, and then a third.

She was rushed to a hospital in the nearby town of Kettering, but succumbed to her injuries.

Brock was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, but posted a $200,000 bond and was freed.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office found that Hall "made no threats or assaults toward Mr. Brock, and made no demands, other than to ask about the package she was sent to retrieve through the Uber App."

Brock nevertheless maintained that he believed she would hurt him, citing the threats he had received from the scammers.

Hall had only recently begun driving for Uber, deciding to try it out after retiring from the Regional Income Tax Agency. She has been remembered as a loving mother and devout Christian with "an avid love for gardening."
