Senator Mitch McConnell remains hospitalized following a June 14 incident at his Washington, DC home, with police scanner audio revealing that paramedics had been conducting CPR on a person experiencing a "cardiac arrest" at the address that day. McConnell is 84-years-old and has been serving Kentucky in the Senate since 1985.
McConnell was admitted to the hospital on June 14, and his office has not officially disclosed why he was admitted. Police scanner audio reviewed by NBC News revealed that the first medic who arrived at the known address for McConnell began performing CPR on a person experiencing "cardiac arrest," being joined by an additional EMS team that arrived at the address.
When asked about the audio on Wednesday, McConnell’s office referred NBC News to a June 22 statement that read, "Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week."
A spokesperson confirmed on Thursday that McConnell remains hospitalized. "Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital. The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session."
McConnell, who announced in 2025 that he would not be seeking re-election, has not been seen since being admitted to the hospital. The Senator has had a series of health issues in recent years, including being hospitalized in 2023 for a concussion after he tripped at a dinner, his hospitalization earlier in 2026 for a week with "flu-like symptoms," and in 2019, he fractured his shoulder in a fall. He has also been caught on camera freezing after being asked questions by reporters.
