Pennsylvania school develops ‘comfort closet’ to help students get through the day
The Curwensville Area School District has come up with a creative solution to ensure students have everything they need to get through the day, a closet stocked full of necessities.
Students often don't perform to the best of their abilities if they are occupied with other problems. The Curwensville Area School District has come up with a creative solution to ensure students have everything they need to get through the day. It's a solution perfect for the extra-sensitive students of the 21st century.
WTAJ reports that the aptly named "Comfort Closet" is stocked full of clothes, food, hygiene items, and more. Originally created to help students in need, these days anyone in the school has access, no questions asked.
As every student knows, it's not always possible to have a proper breakfast before school. The Comfort Closet gives students a second chance, offering nutritious snacks packed fresh by cafeteria workers every morning. With 100 of these snacks available each day, there are more than enough to go around.
The Comfort Closet allows students to focus on their schooling, knowing that anything they may need is there for them. Curwensville guidance counsellor Jesse Husted points out that "whenever you’re hungry, or if you’re thirsty, you just need to fulfill those basic human needs, ... then you can perform better in the classroom.”
The contents of the closet are made up entirely of donations, mainly from the community, but also from neighbouring areas and even out of state.
If you would like to help fill the Comfort Closet, simply get in touch with the Curwensville Area School District here, or contact Jesse Husted at jhusted@curwensville.org.
