Police group raises over $10,000 for family of NYPD officer killed by hit-and-run
The pro-police group New York City Blue Lives Matter raised more than $10,000 for the family of Officer Anastasios Tsakos, who was struck and killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident on the Long Island Expressway last month.
The pro-police group New York City Blue Lives Matter raised more than $10,000 for the family of Officer Anastasios Tsakos, who was struck and killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident on the Long Island Expressway last month.
NYC Blue Lives Matter teamed up with NYPD CrossFit to raise the money through emporia T-shirt sales and a drive held at a CrossFit event on Staten Island, with all proceeds going to the Tsakos family, the New York Post reports.
The workout event, held Monday night at Thrive-Active Gym in Staten Island, was attended by Congresswoman Nichole Malliotakis.
"At this event, we had people young and old, from all walks of life participating one way or the other to remember a hero," said the group's founder, NYPD Sgt. Joseph Imperatrice. "That's special."
Highway officer Tsakos was killed on April 27 after being struck and launched into a nearby grassy area by a drunk driver on the Long Island Expressway in Queens.
NYPD CrossFit, as part of the fundraiser, dedicated a workout to the officer as part of a standing tradition in the CrossFit community.
"In the CrossFit community having a Hero workout named after someone is an honor that is bestowed on those that have made the ultimate sacrifice," said NYPD CrossFit president Ronald Perez. "Most people know of The Murph which is named after US Navy SEAL Lt. Mike Murphy and we have chosen to pay respect to our fallen brother Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos in the same way by having The Tsakos workout."
