Restaurant shuts its doors for ‘day of kindness’ following poor treatment of employees by customers
Anyone who’s ever worked in the dining industry knows customers are not always nice to those who make and serve their food. One restaurant has decided enough is enough, closing for a day to let employees recuperate from the abuse they received.
Anyone who's ever worked in the dining industry knows that customers are not always the most pleasant to those who make and serve their food. One restaurant has decided that enough is enough, closing for a day to let employees recuperate from the abuse they've received.
Apt Cape Cod in Brewster, Massachusetts garnered national attention after they wrote a post on Facebook decrying the behaviour of some of its patrons, announcing that things had gotten so bad that it was "making team members cry."
"As many of our guests and patrons treat us with kindness and understanding," they write, "there have been an astronomical influx daily of those that do not, swearing at us, threatening to sue, arguing and yelling at my staff."
"This is an unacceptable way to treat any human," they continue, "So Chef Regina and I have decided to take the day and give the staff time deep clean the restaurant, train, and treat my staff to a day of kindness."
According to The New York Times, the straw that broke the camel's back was when a customer berated a young employee for daring to suggest that the man could not order takeout while the restaurant was not open.
As The Hill reports, Apt Cape Cod has received support from across the country, as many empathize with the employees whose very shoes many of them likely once filled.
"The response not just from our own small community, but from all over the country has been humbling and overwhelmingly supportive," they told The Hill. "And now we hope that our act of kindness for our employees turns into a movement of kindness for everyone."
