SHOCKING: Middle school student reportedly locked in room for not wearing a mask

"It is the law by Governor Pritzker to let me out of this room. You can't lock me in a room. You can't lock me in here," he says, trying to push the door open. "Please let me out." The video was posted by Twitter account Libs of Tik Tok.

The Post Millennial reached out to the school district, and spoke to a representative from the School Safety Department.

When asked about the video and if it was the policy of the school district to lock students in a room for refusing to wear a face mask, school representative Yesenia Rivera said that this was absolutely not the policy. "No, that doesn't happen," Rivera said, "but I would have to know that school."

She hadn't seen the video, but said that she would bring it up to the safety coordinator. The masked adult keeping the door closed is wearing a badge, which is not readable in the social media clip.

A second video was shared of another student in that district being allegedly locked in a room for not wearing a mask. In that video, a student tries to get out of a room, only to find that they are locked in.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzer did announce a plan to withdraw indoor mask mandates, but not for students. This has been the plan for many governors who implemented mask mandates, and now are removing them for adults only. This despite the fact that adults are at far greater risk of COVID-19 complications and deaths than children.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Pritzker's plans has been cause of frustration for both educators and parents, writing that "...frustrated educators and parents said escalating tensions and plunging virus rates heighten the need for a pandemic exit strategy for beleaguered school districts."

The indoor mask mandate "for most public places" will end at the end of February. Meanwhile, an Illinois judge said that Pritzker's mask mandate for schools was "authorized illegally," reports the Tribune.

Superintendent Tony Sanders, of Unit School District 46, said in response to Pritzker's announcement that caution was still necessary, and that the school district would continue to enforce masking for students, that the exception to this enforcement is only for students whose parents are plaintiffs in the law suit filed against 146 school districts in the state, including District 46.

It is unclear if the boy in the video shared by Libs of Tik Tok is one of these children, or another child who prefers to not wear a mask in school.

School District U-46 comprises 11 towns in Chicago's suburbs, including including Bartlett, Elgin, Hanover Park, South Elgin, Streamwood and Wayne and portions of Carol Stream, Hoffman Estates, St. Charles, Schaumburg, and West Chicago.
