A judge in the Cayman Islands has just reduced the sentence for an American and her boyfriend from four months to two.
Skylar Mack, 18 years old, and Vanjae Ramgeet, her boyfriend, were found guilty and sentenced for breaking the lockdown rules in the Cayman Islands.
Mack arrived at the Caribbean destination on Nov. 27 to watch her boyfriend compete in a jet ski competition and was convicted of not complying with the 14-day quarantine rule. Apparently, she also removed her wrist monitor, according to Atlanta local outlet WSB-TV 2.
Her boyfriend was charged with aiding and abetting and both of them, and received the same sentence as Mack after pleading guilty.
The initial sentence would have been a fine and community service, but the prosecutors felt that the punishment wasn't severe enough and appealed until they obtained a jail term of four months.
"This was entirely deliberate and planned, as evidenced by her desire to switch her wristband the day before to a looser one that she was then able to remove," said Judge Roger Chapple regarding the jail sentence he handed out to the pair.
"I just want her home. I don't know how many more nights, my whole family can can go through this, you know,: said Jeanne Mack, Skylar's mother.
