The WNBA suspended Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello for one game, going unpaid on Saturday over "an inappropriate comment she made regarding Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream."
The incident occurred during Friday's game, where the Dream won 111-92. Cameras caught Brondello arguing with officials after Nyara Sabally was injured during a play involving Reese, who was fouled. In exchange, Brondello used the words "protected species."

Reese reacted on X following the game, writing, "ARE WE SURPRISED?! @SBrondello" alongside a clown emoji.

She later said that she appreciated Brondello's apology that took place later, and said that there is "no place for discrimination or hate" in the WNBA, and said that she was grateful that Brondello was suspended.
Brondello, an Australian who has led her country's national team since 2017, was using the phrase that is common in Australian sports vernacular, which is used to say that referees or officials are giving preferential treatment to a player.
Despite it being a common phrase, Brondello issued an apology to Reese on social media, saying that she takes “full responsibility” for the words.
Her statement read: "Angel, I'm sorry. Last night, in the emotion of the moment after Nyara's injury, I used a phrase that I shouldn't have used, and I take full responsibility for that. My frustration was with the officiating, but my words unfairly put the focus on you.

"I also understand that my words carried an impact beyond what I intended, particularly for Black women in our league, and I'm deeply sorry for that. I've spent my career competing with, coaching and learning from incredible Black women.

"I regret that my words caused hurt to a community I respect so deeply. I have a lot of respect for you as both a player and a person, and I sincerely apologize to you, your teammates, and the Dream organization for my comment."
Brondello's suspension takes effect Monday, when the Tempo face the Las Vegas Aces at home. She also said in an interview that she reached out to Reese to apologize.

Announcing the suspension, the league stated: "The WNBA expects all coaches and team personnel to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect that are fundamental to our league."
