One-third of Democrat respondents in the poll agreed with the statement, “I wish Trump’s assassin hadn’t missed.”
The poll further explored the sentiments behind those who had wished Trump had died. While support for this statement had little variation by demographics related to age or race, it appeared to be strongly correlated with radical left-wing ideology.
Respondents who agreed with the statement were asked a series of additional questions. Notably, 55 percent of those who wished the assassination had succeeded also agreed with the statement “white Republicans are racist,” while only 20 percent disagreed. This belief was the largest indicator of whether someone wished harm upon Trump.
This alarming sentiment comes amid growing concerns that political rhetoric is contributing to a rise in political violence. Another poll by YouGov released last week found that 67 percent of US adults believe the current political environment makes politically motivated violence more likely.
Despite this, political voices on the left continue to label Trump as a Hitlerian figure and a "threat to democracy." Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently participated in an Instagram live where she characterized Trump as a "racist" and a "neo-Nazi."
President Trump recently called out the left in his Michigan rally on Saturday for repeated accusations that he is a “threat to democracy,” a claim many have pointed to as an example of harmful rhetoric. Trump dismissed these claims, pointing out that he “took a bullet for democracy” after the failed assassination attempt.
