"They keep saying ‘he’s a threat to democracy’... last week I took a bullet for democracy."
At a campaign rally in Michigan on Saturday, former President Donald Trump said he “took a bullet for democracy.” The comment came as Trump addressed the repeated accusations that he is a “threat to democracy,” a common attack line from Democrats led by President Joe Biden. In response, Trump brought up the assassination attempt that left him with a bullet wound to his right ear.
“They keep saying ‘he’s a threat to democracy’... last week I took a bullet for democracy,” Trump told the crowd, drawing applause from his supporters.
The Michigan rally marked Trump’s first campaign appearance since the assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and his first rally since officially selecting Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate for the vice presidency.
Prior to Trump addressing the crowd JD Vance took the stage, saying, "I find it hard to believe that a week ago an assassin tried to take Donald Trump's life and now we have a hell of a crowd in Michigan to welcome him back on the campaign trail.”
Following the failed assassination attempt on Trump’s life, several left-wing commentators have attempted to claim that Trump has lied about being shot. Keith Olbermann posted a video on TikTok and X over the weekend where he pushed this baseless conspiracy theory, asking “Why is Trump lying about the assassination attempt?” His post on X immediately received a community note debunking this claim.
