On Saturday, Donald Trump and JD Vance held a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This was the first rally since Trump’s assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The rally also marks the first campaign event since the conclusion of the Republican National Convention, where Trump and Vance officially became the presidential and vice-presidential nominees for the Republican Party.

"I find it hard to believe that a week ago an assassin tried to take Donald Trump's life and now we have a hell of a crowd in Michigan to welcome him back on the campaign trail," Vance said when he took the stage.

During the rally, Trump took a jab at Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, labeling her a "terrible governor" who has done a "terrible job." He also joked that he would like to "run against her," mentioning that she is one of the names floating around as a potential alternative to Joe Biden as the Democratic party's nominee.

Michigan, a critical battleground state that supported Trump in 2016 but shifted to Biden in 2020, is receiving significant attention from both presidential candidates. Currently, Trump has a slight lead over Biden in the polls, with a recent Emerson poll from earlier this week indicating Trump leading Biden by three points.

The rally was held as Biden is still recovering from COVID-19, which required him to halt all campaign events, temporarily. The Biden campaign has confirmed that he plans to return to the campaign trail once he receives medical clearance from his doctors. However, Democrat officials continue to express concern over Biden’s ability to campaign, arguing that he should consider stepping out of the presidential race and allow the Democratic Party to select an alternative nominee.
