Dr. David Williams, the Chief Medical Officer of Ontario, announced a series of new coronavirus-related restrictions in the province Friday afternoon. The restrictions come into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, October 10.

The restrictions are returning amid a spike in new coronavirus cases in recent weeks. Ontario recorded 939 new cases on Friday, the highest daily increase since the start of the pandemic.

Under the new restrictions, indoor gatherings will be limited to 10 people and outdoor events limited to 25. Social distancing protocols must be met at all gatherings, whether they be indoors or outdoors. Schools and houses of worship are exempt from such restrictions.

The new restrictions will also affect services such as tours and open houses, which are limited to hosting 10 people at a time. Sports teams may train among each other but may not play against other teams. Restaurants can seat people outdoors and offer take-out, but are not allowed to host indoor patrons.

Some businesses are being closed entirely for the time being. Gyms, casinos, theaters, stadiums, and exhibitions are all being forced to closed by the province. Wedding receptions are also prohibited under the new rules, although these restrictions do not come into affect until Tuesday.

The new sets of restrictions only apply to Toronto, Ottawa, and Peel Region, and are to last for 28 days.
