Erin O'Toole, the Conservative Party leader, has just promised on Friday during his campaign to crack down on illegal guns and the gangs that traffic them.
O'Toole was speaking in the city of Montreal, where there have been several shocking incidents in recent months involving illegal firearms, and where people's perception of security has been rapidly deteriorating, many observers say.
O'Toole has previously criticized other Canadian political parties as being "all the same", and promises to distinguish himself and the rest of the Conservative Party if voters give him a change in the upcoming elections.
According to CTV News, O'Toole mentioned that he wants stricter bail requirements for people with previous criminal records that have been linked provably to the country's criminal gangs.
In addition, he promised to institute new mandatory minimum prison sentences for people who deal in illegal firearms with previous criminal convictions on file.
And finally, he committed to, if elected as Prime Minister in the upcoming elections on Sept. 20 2021, working closely with private companies in order to design and implement programs that give people a viable way out from Canada's street gangs.
The Conservatives are currently riding a wave of momentum, as they surged ahead strongly in recent polls starting in the middle of Aug. 2021, and continue to maintain a double-digit lead as of the time of this writing.
