An Ottawa mother is shocked and seeking answers after Canada Post delivered a shotgun in the mail to her 11-year-old son, CityNews reports.

The woman, who went only by Dawna, claims that she was working from home when Canada Post delivered a package to her door. Unable to get the door, her son took the package and opened it himself.

"Mom, you've got to see this! There's a gun!" her son yelled upon opening the package.

She later called Canada Post about the incident and they arrived to pick up the package the next day. They did not offer any explanation on how it wound up being delivered to her house, however.

A "Canuck" shotgun was delivered to the home, according to Dawna.

Dawna said it was "concerning" that there is no verification required when ordering a firearm in the mail. While she said that she has no issue with gun ownership, but she thinks there should be some sort of verification process to ensure that a person who purchases a firearm online is also the one receiving it.

She noted that Canada Post's website requires proof of age when firearms are being delivered.

"It said signature 18-plus, but nobody asked," she said. "The person asked for an adult, but didn't wait. My son said 'there's no adult who can come to the door right now,' and so she gave him the box."
