Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday that said there was no chance Canada would become a part of the United States. This comes after President-elect Donald trump has referred to the United States’ northern neighbor as the 51st state and has said that Canadians would enjoy becoming part of America.

"There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States," Trudeau wrote. "Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partner."

On Monday, Trudeau announced his intention to resign after a new Liberal Party leader is selected. In response to the news, Trump wrote, "Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st state. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned. If Canada merged with the US, there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!"

Trump has repeatedly referred to Canada as the 51st state after threatening to hit the country with tariffs if the Trudeau government did nothing to help stem illegal immigration into the US. During a meeting in early December at Mar-a-Lago, Trump told Trudeau he could become the governor of the 51st state if he thought the proposed tariffs would kill Canada’s economy. Trump also suggested on Christmas Day that Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky run for the "Governor of Canada" position, who would "win easily."

During a Tuesday press conference, Trump said that he would consider using "economic force" to acquire Canada, "because Canada and the United States, that would really be something." He said that the US has spent "hundreds of billions a year to take care of Canada" despite losing money in the trade deficit.
