Pfizer reducing vaccine shipments to Canada amid production issues

"This is unfortunate. However such delays and issues are to be expected when global supply chains are stretched well beyond their limits," Anand said.

Procurement Minister Anita Anand announced on Friday that Canadian procurements of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine will be reduced as the company faces production issues, CP24 reports.

The company is reducing shipments outside of the United States as their European facilities face production problems.

"This is unfortunate. However such delays and issues are to be expected when global supply chains are stretched well beyond their limits," Anand said.

Anand said that while the delays will slow the procurement of the vaccine, it will not grind the process to a complete halt, and Canada will still receive smaller shipments of vaccine dosages.

Canada was supposed to have procured four million doses of the vaccine by the end of April. According to Anand, such procurement is still possible, but not guaranteed.

Coronavirus has infected nearly 700,000 Canadians since the beginning of the pandemic, and has taken the lives of more than 17,000.
