On Wednesday, Toronto police apprehended and arrested a man suspected of kidnapping a man and holding him for ransom on Jun. 10 2021 in North York.
The kidnapping, one of many occurring in the Greater Toronto area, occurred around the area of Faywood Boulevard and Wilson Avenue, close to the Yorkdale Mall.
According to CTV News Toronto, a man was kidnapped and struck with a firearm. Suspects then contacted a friend of the victim and demanded money as ransom. An undisclosed sum of money in cash was then paid to the suspects, and they released the victim as promised.
On the following day, authorities were notified and an investigation commenced, which has now culminated in Wednesday's arrest.
Toronto Metropolitan Police released the following statement on Thursday:
"On Wednesday, September 8, 2021, members of the Central North District Major Crime Unit, with the assistance of the Emergency Task Force, executed three Criminal Code Search Warrants in Toronto and York Region, locating and taking one suspect into custody."
The suspect has been identified as Jaye Tamodra, a 25-year-old resident of Richmond Hill. He has now been charged with kidnapping for ransom, robbery with a firearm, extortion, forcible confinement, and unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm.
At the time of his arrest, Tamodra had a 9mm semi-automatic handgun on his person, with a special magazine allowing for an increase in the gun's capacity. Police also found 50 rounds of ammunition and around $10,000 in cash.
Police have advised that they still have two suspects that they are pursuing, and, as such, the investigation is still ongoing. Anybody with any information which may help with this case are encouraged to contact the Toronto police, or Crime Stoppers.
