Publix Super Markets announced Tuesday that they will not be offering COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 4 and under "at this time."
Despite playing a significant role in Florida's vaccine rollout at the height of the pandemic, the major grocery store chain has decided not to take a role in vaccinating those that are the least likely to have complications from COVID.
Hannah Herring, a spokesperson for Publix, said that Publix will not release a statement explaining its decision, Tampa Bay Times reports.
Florida lawmakers have long argued about the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines and whether or not it would be beneficial for healthy children, who are essentially unaffected by COVID, to receive one.
Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo recommended against giving vaccines to healthy children, going against recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), according to Tampa Bay Times.
Florida was the only state in the nation not to preorder doses of the under 5 vaccine, which drew strong pushback from the White House.
The FDA approved COVID-19 vaccines for children ages six months to five years old last week, and the shots were rolled out for the first time on Tuesday morning.
