"Yes, I'm worried about me– but only as much as I'm worried about all of us."
Maddow, however, appeared to believe that Trump would go beyond simply using the camps to hold illegal immigrants, and instead fill them up with people he's "singled out" for being disloyal or simply disagreeable. She claimed to be among those on his list.
According to the New York Post, the MSNBC host said she was "worried about the country broadly if we put someone in power who is openly avowing that he plans to build camps to hold millions of people, and to 'root out' what he's described in subhuman terms as his 'enemy from within'." When Trump used that language, he was referring to those who had entered the country illegally, many of whom had criminal records.
"For that matter," she continued, "what convinces you that these massive camps he's planning are only for migrants? So yes, I'm worried about me– but only as much as I'm worried about all of us."
When asked whether she felt especially targeted for being "one of [Trump's] most notable critics on television," Maddow said there was "a little bit of head-in-the-sand complacency" in the belief that he "intends to go after individual people he has already singled out." She suggested that a number of people in politics were already trying to get on Trump's good side to stay "safe."
Earlier this year, Trump said he would do anything necessary to implement the aforementioned crackdown on illegal immigrants in the country. Maddow questioned whether he would actually stop at them, or keep going to root out anyone he deemed undesirable.
"When Trump invokes the Insurrection Act to deploy the US military against civilians on his first day in office, do you think he then rescinds the order on day two?" she asked rhetorically.
