The Department of Justice has unsealed the complaint and affidavit charging Cole Allen Tomas with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump during Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC.
The criminal complaint charges Allen with three counts: attempting to assassinate the President of the United States, transportation of a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony, and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.
The affidavit said that Allen arrived at the Washington Hilton hotel in the afternoon of April 24 after traveling across the country by train. He approached a security checkpoint in the terrace level of the hotel that led to the dinner’s location at around 8:40 pm, running through the magnetometer holding a gun.
An officer, identified only as Officer VG, was shot in the chest and was wearing a ballistic vest at the time. He fired multiple times at Allen, who was not hit and fell to the ground, where he was arrested. Allen had been in possession of a 12-gauge pump action shotgun and a Rock Island Armory 1911 .38 caliber pistol at the time of his arrest, the affidavit stated. He had purchased the shotgun on August 17, 2025, and the pistol on October 6, 2023. "Based on the serial numbers in the database records, these two firearms are the same two firearms that Allen possessed and/or fired at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C. on April 25, 2026."
The affidavit stated that Allen had sent an email to members of his family and a former employer shortly before 8:40 pm, which stated, "I wish I could have said anything earlier, but doing so would have made none of this possible. My sincerest apologies for all the trouble I've caused. (scheduled send)-Cole."
Attached to the email was a manifesto, in which he apologized to those who know him, and stated that he was "no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes." He said his targets were administration officials "prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest," noting that this did not include FBI Director Kash Patel.
