Adult Swim on Friday has just released an enticing promotional 14-second clip of a new live-action version of the hit science fantasy show Rick and Morty.

The iconic animated series, jointly created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, has gained numerous loyal fans since its inception in 2013 and is slated to wrap up its fifth season on Sunday. At one point, the continuation of the series was in doubt, due to unspecified personal issues on the part of Roiland, but Adult Swim wound up making the pair an offer the duo apparently couldn't refuse, signing them on after the end of the third long-awaited season for another 70 episodes.

The unannounced live-action clip represents the fulfillment of a wish for many of the show's most hardcore followers, as it is an idea that has been continuously pushed online in discussion forums and subreddits.

The clip features the eminently recognizable Christopher Lloyd, often tapped for "mad scientist" types of on-screen roles. Famously, he personified the eccentric genius of the 1985 film Back to the Future, Dr. Emmet Brown, who sends the show's protagonist into the past to meet a younger version of him.

Lloyd is playing the equally eccentric but less amicable Rick Sanchez, a genius scientist who mistreats his hapless grandson Morty, played by Jaeden Martell, who starred in both the 2017 and 2019 versions of Stephen King's horrifying It.

The Rick and Morty series is a sort of pseudo-parody of Back to the Future, in fact. It was originally entitled, "The Animated Adventures of Doc and Marthi."

The video features a live-action recreation of Rick's garage-turned-laboratory and the show's lime green portal. Lloyd and Martell step out of the storytelling device used for science fictional travel as the C-132 versions of the titular characters.

Many have debated who would best carry a live-action version of Rick and Morty should a series or film be made. Although, the viral social media promo may just be a marketing clip to build anticipation over the weekend for the season 5 finale.
