A Savanah police officer who was part of a Kamala Harris and Tim Walz motorcade on Wednesday sustained serious injuries after a motorcycle crash.

In a statement, Savannah Police said that Corporal David Bates was injured in a single-vehicle accident while working the motorcade, and that no other vehicles were involved. Bates was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center with serious injuries, but as of Friday was said to be in stable condition has he continues to undergo treatment.

A police spokesperson told WJCL that Bates was injured after he lost control of his motorcycle at around 7 pm on 1-516.

Frederick D. Houston, Special Agent in Charge of the US Secret Service’s Atlanta Field Office, said Secret Service is "aware" of the incident. "The movement was not affected by the incident.  We are thankful for the support of our law enforcement partners and wish Corporal David Bates a full and speedy recovery."

A member of the press pool told Fox 5 Atlanta that the motorcade stopped on the highway at around 7:20 pm. They added that it appeared like a door on one of the buses opened momentarily. Around three minutes later, the motorcade moved forward.

Harris and Walz had stopped at Sandfly Bar-B-Q in Savannah before the crash, leaving the restaurant at 6:56 pm. Part of their visit was aired on CNN.
