SeattleFWC26, Seattle’s local organizing committee, designated the game a “Pride Match” long before the tournament draw, timing it to coincide with the city’s official Pride weekend. SeattleFWC26 has emphasized that the Pride Match label is a local initiative “not affiliated with or endorsed by FIFA,” according to its website. The “Pride Match” concept was created in anticipation of the World Cup’s arrival, with Seattle organizers aiming to use the sport’s global spotlight to promote inclusion and visibility. Like other host cities, Seattle did not know which countries it would stage during the planning phase; matchups were unknown until the tournament draw finalized the schedule last week.
In Iran, homosexuality can be punishable by death. In Egypt, LGBTQ people are frequently targeted through public morality enforcement and prosecuted under “debauchery” statutes. SeattleFWC26 has leaned into cultural programming to reinforce the Pride Match identity. Organizers have partnered with artists across Washington state to create LGBTQ-themed public artwork, intended to be displayed throughout the city during the match period.
The committee has also formed a Pride Match Advisory Committee (PMAC), tasked with shaping “communications, community activations, and cultural programming” around the event. Despite the countries playing in the matchup, the PMAC remains confident in its mission, suggesting Seattle intends to double down on the Pride-week framing.
During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, FIFA faced international criticism after warning teams that players could be sanctioned for wearing the rainbow-colored “OneLove” armbands. Several European teams, including England and Wales, abandoned plans to wear the armbands after FIFA signaled on-field penalties. Other teams, such as Germany, protested by covering their mouths during pre-match team photos.
Seemingly oblivious to the irony of the matchup, Socialist Mayor-elect Katie Wilson posted on social media, “Our city is ready, the fans are ready, and I can't wait! FIFA World Cup is coming to Seattle, and we are excited to be a part of the global celebration. With matches on Juneteenth and pride, we get to show the world that in Seattle, everyone is welcome. What an incredible honor!”
