The Louisiana primary was held just days after the Indiana primary, which also saw Trump-backed candidates win big on the state level.
Trump-backed Rep. Julia Letlow and Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming outperformed Cassidy in Saturday's Republican primary. As of Sunday morning, Letlow led with 45 percent, followed by Fleming at around 28 percent, while Cassidy trailed just below 25 percent. Since none of the candidates secured a majority, Letlow and Fleming will face each other in a runoff election next month to determine the Republican nominee.
The contest marked a demonstration of Trump’s influence over Republican primary races as well as his position as the leader of the party. On Saturday, Trump wrote on Truth Social, taking a swing at Cassidy, “Bill Cassidy, after falsely using his 'relationship' with me during his political career, and winning Elections because of it, voted to impeach me on preposterous charges that were fake then, and now, are criminally insane! His disloyalty to the man who got him elected is now a part of legend, and it’s nice to see that his political career is OVER! I’d like to thank the Great People of the State of Louisiana, and this Big Victory will only make me work even harder for your success, and all that comes with it. I LOVE YOU ALL. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
In contrast with that, Trump posted about Letlow’s success in the primary election, “Congratulations to Congresswoman Julia Letlow on a fantastic race, beating an Incumbent Senator by Record Setting Numbers. This is the first time in History that a sitting Senator has lost by such large numbers in a Primary, unable to even go forward. Julia Letlow is a fantastic person and, after taking care of some additional business, will make a brilliant Senator for the Great People of Louisiana, a State that I love, helped make prosperous with my Energy Policies and everything else, and won six times in a row, including Primaries. Julia Letlow is a spectacular person, and will never let you down!”
“Your endorsement propelled us to victory tonight, and I will never let you down,” Letlow said in response.
The Louisiana primary was held just days after the Indiana primary, which also saw Trump-backed candidates win big on the state level. Several incumbent state-level lawmakers had bucked Trump's efforts to redraw the congressional maps in the state of Indiana. That later led to them getting primaried with candidates backed by Trump and the help of Turning Point Action.
Cassidy was one of seven Republicans in the Senate who voted to convict Trump in 2021 after he was impeached over January 6. Trump was acquitted by the Senate at the time.
