For the first time since a recent draconian lockdown, new daily COVID cases in the city of Shanghai have dropped below 10,000 per day, according to authorities.

As a response, local officials have finally given the green light to start phasing out the restrictive measures that have affected up to 26 million people at a time, keeping people confined to their residences and often even distributing of food.

According to ABC News, "China’s largest city recorded about 7,000 cases a day on Saturday and Sunday, down from a peak of 27,605 nearly three weeks ago on April 13."

ABC News also reports that "authorities have begun a limited easing of a citywide lockdown that has disrupted the lives of millions of residents and dealt at least a temporary blow to China's economy."

China's "Zero-COVID" policy has come under harsh criticism recently. Many experts feel that the measures are inappropriate for the current environment, with other options for dealing with the pandemic now at our disposal.

"Continuing to enforce a zero-COVID-19 policy now, including a lockdown approach and restricting travel, is almost like pretending we have learned nothing over the past two years, now that effective treatment options and various vaccines are available," opined RIT International's Vice President for Global Health, Richard Reithinger.

Reithinger also indicated that China still has a lot of unvaccinated people of advanced age, due to their massive population and the fact that they have prioritized front-line workers, leaving the elderly often still waiting for the vaccine.

However, the Chinese government so far has refused to budge on its strict COVID policies, saying that now is not the time to relax the measures.
