A new internal federal memo has revealed that federal authorities captured a terrorist at the southern border, but released him into the United States where he roamed free for around a year before being arrested in Minnesota.

The memo, obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation, stated that the unidentified individual who is a member of the Somali terror group al-Shabaab, was released shortly after being caught entering the US illegally near San Ysidro, California on March 13, 2023.

The Terrorist Screen Center "deemed him a 'mismatch'" after his name was run through the terror watchlist.

The Terrorist Screening Center "made a redetermination" on January 18, 2024, stating that the man was "a confirmed member of al-Shabaab," and was involved in the use, manufacture, or transport of explosives or firearms.

The man was arrested two days later by ICE in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

During the 2023 fiscal year, which ran from October 2022 to September 2023, 172 terror watchlist suspects were caught attempting to come into the US illegally. Between October and December 2023, a total of 50 people on the terror watchlist were apprehended at the border. Just 30 encounters of this kind were recorded between fiscal years 2017 and 2020.

This comes as a video of Rep Ilhan Omar speaking at a Minneapolis event on Sunday evening went viral on social media, with the Democrat congresswoman stating "I am here to protect the interest of Somalia from inside the US system.
