A Turkish illegal immigrant has been arrested over a month after he allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl in the back of his car in Albany, New York. Sakir Akkan, 21, was subsequently charged with first degree rape. He was previously arrested when he crossed the border last year but was released by Border Patrol due to a lack of bed space.
Akkan, originally from Turkey, was apprehended by border security after crossing into the United States illegally via San Diego last November, but quickly released due to a lack of space in detention facilities. After telling agents he was trying to get to Philadelphia, he was ordered to appear in court in Pennsylvania in February 2025, per the New York Post.
According to the Times Union, the incident took place in the wee hours of May 14. Akkan had been driving down New Scotland Avenue in Albany when he spotted the victim making her way down the sidewalk after running away from a group home. He allegedly parked his Toyota Prius and got out of the vehicle armed with a metal pole, with which he threatened her.
The teen did as she was told and got in the car and together they drove to a secluded area, where he proceeded to rip her clothes off and rape her. She managed to escape a short time later and sought refuge in a nearby home, before being transported to a local hospital. There, it was revealed that she had scratches on her legs allegedly from attempting to stop Akkan from attacking her.
The suspect was finally tracked down by law enforcement and taken into custody on June 18. It was only while police were taking his fingerprints did they realize he was an illegal immigrant.
House GOP Chairwoman Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) reacted to the news of the incident, saying, “Another illegal immigrant took advantage of Biden’s radical open borders policy to rape an innocent American child, this time in Upstate NY. The victims of Biden’s border crisis are more than headlines. They are our relatives, friends, and neighbors that Far Left Democrats have put in harm’s way.”
Over 15,000 people from Turkey illegally entered the US in Fiscal Years 2022 and 2023, mostly via the San Diego sector. That is up dramatically from the 1,400 encounters reported by Customs and Border Protection agents in Fiscal Year 2021, per the Post.
