Sen. Ted Cruz isn’t holding back against the Lincoln Project, referring to the organization as “pedophiles” who “need to stop talking about my children.”

Cruz became the subject of a Lincoln Project video on late Monday after one of the group’s founders, Steve Schmidt, slammed Cruz for criticizing Sesame Street, which recently promoted the vaccine to children as young as five.

The Lincoln Project is a political organization run by former Republicans and “NeverTrumpers” whose operation revolves around attacking the GOP and supporting Democrat causes. The group recently came under fire for taking credit for a hate hoax in Virginia ahead of the gubernatorial vote by posing as supporters of Republican nominee Glenn Youngkin while dressed up as members of the “alt-right” bearing tiki torches during his visit to Charlottesville, the site of a deadly white nationalist protest in 2017.

In his interview with MSNBC, Schmidt told Deadline’s Nicolle Wallace that "If Ted Cruz had kids that age, the chances that they would be unvaccinated are exactly zero. Zero. So, this is another moment of just abject stupidity of a United States senator from one of the nation’s MAGA states," he said.

“It’s a really serious moment, a really serious time for the country. We have big problems. We have big challenges,” said Schmidt. “We are at the end of one era – the timeframe of the end of the second world war to the 2016, and the beginning of a new one. Our leaders don’t seem matched to their responsibilities and highest on that list really with few peers are the Josh Hawleys and the Ted Cruzes and the Kevin McCarthys and the whole lot of them. Just of all the things you could get up and use your platform to talk about how stupid is it to spread anxiety for families knowing that this vaccine can save the lives of children who thankfully aren’t the prime danger class of covid but we don’t really know what the consequences of long covid and all these other factors are.”

“Vaccines have been part of American life, thank god, creations of American science for decades, and have saved lives from misery, disease and death. And to see someone who’s had every educational privilege and opportunity in this county doing that, and doing this from high office, it’s just despicable,” Schmidt concluded.

In response to Schmidt’s remarks, Cruz fired off a rebuttal to the Project Lincoln cofounder, writing simply, “The pedophiles at @ProjectLincoln need to stop talking about my children.”
