"We are excited to lie constantly for cold, hard cash, but this time in a cool way."
The plans The Onion has for the site revolve around making it a complete joke. Comedian Tim Heidecker will be the "creative director of Infowars," and said that he plans to make a parody of Jones' "whole modus operandi." His plan is to remake Infowars into an experimental comedy site.
"I just thought it would be just a beautiful joke if we could take this pretty toxic, negative, destructive force of Infowars and rebrand it as this beautiful place for our creativity," he said. He's already begun filming videos where he impersonates Jones. Heidecker is known for his Cartoon Network Adult Swim show "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!"
He announced his plans for the site on Instagram in front of the Liberty Bell.
Head of The Onion's parent company Global Tetrahedron Ben Collins said, "We are excited to lie constantly for cold, hard cash, but this time in a cool way, and we’ll make sure some of it gets back to the families."
The Onion won a bid to buy the outlet in 2024 and their plans to run it included sharing proceeds with the Sandy Hook families. While that bid was stopped by a court after Jones complained about the auction process, this new plan is part of their continued effort to take over the site. At that time, The Onion's bid included funds that had yet to be collected from Jones as part of the purchase price.
This new plan would see The Onion license the site from the court-appointed manager, Gregory Milligan, reports The New York Times. The Onion would rebrand to make Infowars a parody of itself, entirely and intentionally undermining Jones' vision for his company.
Jones still runs his show, The Alex Jones Show, on Infowars daily. Infowars journalists have been swatted in Austin and one reporter, Jamie White, was murdered in the parking lot of his apartment building in 2025.
The terms, which Milligan asked Judge Maya Guerra Gamble to approve, would see The Onion pay $81,000 per month to license the site and name with a 6-month renewal option. Guerra Gamble must approve it before it goes through and Jones can appeal. The court should rule within the next few weeks, per the Times.
Jones was taken to court over comments made about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, carried out by Adam Lanza. Jones apologized for the remarks, but he was taken to court for defamation and ordered to pay $1.4 billion in damages to the families of those children murdered. Then, Guerra Gamble approved the auctioning off of Infowars to pay the families.
