US Border Patrol were on their normal boat operations patrolling the Rio Grande near the Eagle Pass South station on Tuesday when they found two abandoned children left near the shore. The pair were found with no signs of adults anywhere near.
A toddler and an infant in a child carrier left beside each other. On the the carrier was a note identifying the two children, stating their ages, and that they are siblings and from Honduras. There have been other incidents of young children abandoned at the US-Mexico border.
According to local outlet KWTX, the discovery occurred around noon on Tuesday, when agents spotted the unusual colors on the riverbank from their boats, and stopped to investigate.
"Agents quickly responded and safely retrieved both children. The children did not require medical attention and were transported to the Uvalde Station for processing," the official Border Patrol press release reads.
"A thorough search of the area was conducted and no additional individuals were encountered."
"The attention to detail our agents demonstrate while preforming their duties can be the difference between life and death. It is heartbreaking and frustrating to know that there are children being abandoned without remorse or concern for their lives and wellbeing," further stated Robert Garcia, the chief of the Del Rio sector of the Border Patrol.
