Toronto mayor suggests publicly shaming business owners that do not comply with lockdown orders

"I am going to suggest we should make the name public because I think anyone who is that irresponsible as an owner not only should be facing their day in court, and not only be given the maximum fine as well but they should be shamed"

Toronto Mayor John Tory suggested on Monday that business owners who defy lockdown orders should be publicly shamed, CP24 reports.

"If it’s just a protocol, I am going to suggest we should make the name public because I think anyone who is that irresponsible as an owner not only should be facing their day in court, and not only be given the maximum fine as well but they should be shamed," Tory said.

Tory's comments come in reference to a business that was operating as a makeshift bar before being busted by police Sunday night. According to police, 30-40 people were inside the establishment in the Queen and Portland area where alcoholic beverages were being served, in violation of provincial lockdown orders.

The business owners, of which there were two, were issued court summons under the Reopening Ontario Act. Such fines can reach up to $100,000.

"This is grossly irresponsible business behaviour," Tory said further on the matter. The mayor also suggested that the business owners involved "should get the maximum fine."

Indoor bar activity has been banned in Toronto since October 10 under provincial lockdown guidelines as part of the government's attempt to control the spread of coronavirus.
