Writing in his diary before the murder, Teasley said that he was "battling with my gender identity and sexuality."
An Arizona man who was charged with brutally stabbing a woman to death on a hiking trail in Phoenix has accepted a plea deal that will see him avoid the death penalty. Zion Teasley, 25, pleaded guilty to the 2023 murder of 29-year-old Lauren Heike, who had been stabbed 15 times.
Teasley is set to be sentenced in December, where he faces up to life in prison without parole. As part of the plea deal, Teasley will also admit to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor in a separate case from March 2019. Additionally, the plea deal will see two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and burglary stemming from a January 2020 incident dismissed.
Heike’s family said in a statement following the guilty plea, “After 3 1/2 incredibly long and painful years, our family supports the State's decision to enter into a plea agreement in Lauren’s case," per the Daily Mail. "This means we will not have to endure a trial or sit in a courtroom and hear every painful detail of the crime that took Lauren from us. There is a tremendous sense of relief in knowing that we will be spared that additional trauma.”
“We fully supported the State’s efforts to seek the death penalty, but we are in agreement with the plea offer made by the defendant. He offered to plead guilty to first degree murder and accept a natural life sentence. As this chapter comes to an end, we hope to finally begin healing and to focus less on how Lauren’s life ended and more on the beautiful life she lived and the love and memories she left with all of us,” the statement added.
The April 29, 2025 incident occurred on the Reach 11 trail near Scottsdale Road and Mayo Boulevard. Prosecutors said Teasley had ambushed Heike, chasing her down the trail. Several of her belongings were found on a barbed wire fence she had run through near where her body was discovered. Police said that Heike, who did not know her killer, suffered a number of fatal wounds to her upper body.
Teasley was arrested five days later, after DNA on Heike’s shoe tied him to the crime. A 2025 police report claimed that he had never met his victim before, and attacked her at random because he was struggling with his gender identity.
Writing in his diary before the murder, Teasley wrote that he was “battling with my gender identity and sexuality,” and that he felt it was wrong because he was “Christian, so this isn’t allowed.” He wrote, “I want to live a life of serving god, but how can I with these and other sins in the way. Ik (I know) I am forgiven for my sins. But it’s still a lot of pressure and it’s hard to maintain a good Christian mindset 24/7.”
In a search of Teasley’s phone, police found photos from Heike’s social media that were accessed after her death, as well as images of Teasley wearing an outfit similar to what Heike had been killed in. Teasley told authorities that he only knew of Heike from the news, but said “that’s what I would want to look like,” referring to her appearance. He had said before the killing that he wanted to be a woman.
