The latest "Model of the Year" named by the British Fashion Council's Fashion Awards is trans Californian Alex Consani. The leggy blonde 21-year-old is the first trans model to win the women's award. The prestigious award, once given only to women, has created a platform for the trans model to discuss the win as a "groundbreaking" achievement.

"I'm the first trans woman to win this award!" Consani told the audience before discussing those upon whose backs Consani stands. "But I can't accept this award without thanking those who came before me, specifically the black trans women who really fought for the space I'm in today." Consani began gender transition as a minor and was already working as a women's model at the age of 12.

Consani's TikTok launched Consani's career during Covid and the account gained over 3 million followers who encouraged and "affirmed" Consani's quest to live life as the opposite sex. Consani began taking cross-sex hormones during puberty and it was Consani's mother who pushed the child into modeling in 2015, when Consani was just 12-years-old. The child began playing dress up in girls' clothes at the age of four. Consani adopted the name "Alex" at 8-years-old.

"Change is more than possible; it's needed," Consani said, as though in some way the fashion industry, which markets clothing with the bodies of skinny women without curves, has in some way discriminated against trans-identified males.

In an interview after the win, Consani was asked what Consani would say to "the young dolls listening out there." Consani spoke about how important it is to have support and how if the "young dolls" don't have any support, to be that support for themselves.

"But at the end of the day," Consani said, holding up the award, "I was able to get this because I believed in myself, and I believed that I was enough just because I was who I was."

"No matter what anybody else says around you, you are that bitch," Consani said. "And you will be that bitch, and you will be as successful as you want to be as long as you follow that."

Consani has been featured in bra and panties as a Victoria's Secret model with puffy wings and has walked the runway since 2019, when Consani signed with IMG Models at 15. Consani has walked for Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Burberry and Jacquemus and was featured in a music video for Charli XCX.
