It has been revealed that the Virginia student accused of photographing and videotaping more than 40 students under bathroom stalls at Freedom High School identifies as transgender, sources told ABC 7 News. The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the matter.

Principal Tania Brown sent an email to parents last month, announcing that a student had allegedly been caught recording another student under a bathroom stall. Brown issued a follow-up email last week stating that it was not an isolated incident and urged more students who may be victims to come forward.

Sources familiar with the matter told ABC 7 News that there are allegedly dozens of victims, and the perpetrator reportedly took the illicit photos and videos over the past three years. The student under investigation is a biological male who identifies as female, according to Fox5.

"The LCSO is investigating allegations of unlawful filming at Freedom High School involving juveniles," the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Additionally, Loudoun County Public Schools said that the district is taking these "significant allegations" seriously. "Loudoun County Public Schools is committed to transparency and will continue to provide accurate information to the community while working within the applicable legal parameters concerning the privacy rights of students and staff," the district told Fox5.

Principal Brown explained that further information could not be released due to the active police investigation. "Out of sensitivity to those involved and to the larger school community, we encourage everyone to refrain from speculation and from passing on rumors," said Brown.

The school district said that it has set up resources for students who may need support. This comes shortly after a Loudoun County Public Schools substitute teacher, who identifies as transgender, was arrested last month for threatening to go on a "murder spree" at a different high school in the district.
