Ottawa City Councillor Diane Deans told CBC's Power and Politics that the freedom convoy in downtown Ottawa are "well-polished professional people" that are executing a plan out of "the Trump playbook" to cause an "insurrection" against the Trudeau government.
The very level-headed councillor made the comments after former bank of Canada governor Mark Carney called the protest seditious.
"We all need to work together this is not something this country has ever seen before. Mark Carney referred to it as sedition before, I think that's exactly what it is. This is treason this is a group of well-polished professional people that are trying to overthrow a democratically elected government of this country."
"It's not targeted at the city of Ottawa, it's much bigger than that. It's really an insurrection. It's an attack on our democracy and an attack on our federal government. it has a lot of international elements to it. Money is flowing from the US. It's right out of the Trump playbook."
Deans also made headlines last week, after she said that legal action should be taken against GoFundMe, and that their money should be seized. The funds were eventually frozen, and refunds are being issued to donors who fill out a form.
"I wanna ask the mayor and ask GoFundMe in the States directly and demand that they cease and desist sending money to these protestors. And perhaps while he's at it he can pick up the phone and ask the prime minister to do the same. We've had some conversation about perhaps suing GoFundMe, but legal action takes time, and this is urgent. We need to cut off the pipeline of funding to these people—mercenaries, if you will—who are unlawfully protesting and occupying our communities," she said.
