"As President, he is a partner to Canadians — and a true friend," Trudeau wrote.
Among them was Justin Trudeau, who thanked Biden for his years of public service. The Canadian prime minister praised his American counterpart as a "great man," suggesting he had been kind to his neighbours to the north.
"I've known President Biden for years," Trudeau wrote in a post on X. "He's a great man, and everything he does is guided by his love for his country. As President, he is a partner to Canadians — and a true friend. To President Biden and the First Lady: thank you."
While Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh did not release statements on the matter, a number of other Canadian politicians did.
"President Joe Biden has been one of Canada's greatest friends and allies," Olympian-turned-Liberal member of parliament Adam van Koeverden wrote. "His legacy will be strong - for working people, on fighting climate change, for students & young people - he has achieved extraordinary results for Americans. His speech in the HoC was truly inspiring."
In a statement to CTV News, Canadian Ambassador to the US Kirsten Hillman called Biden "an experienced, thoughtful and dedicated leader."
"In working together on issues that matter to Americans and Canadians, from economic security to fighting climate change and supporting Ukraine, the US-Canada relationship has flourished under (Biden's) leadership," she added.
US Ambassador to Canada David Cohen echoed her sentiments, saying he was "enormously proud of [Biden's] leadership of the United States in assembling a coalition of the world’s leading democracies to protect and preserve democratic values – and of his leadership in restoring confidence and trust in the United States globally."
