With Trump's Twitter account restored, the former president's campaign is now eyeing its return to Facebook, with a formal petition filed against parent company Meta to unblock the account.

Trump's Facebook account was locked following the US Capitol riots two years ago.

"We believe that the ban on President Trump’s account on Facebook has dramatically distorted and inhibited the public discourse," the Trump campaign wrote to Meta, according to NBC News.

Sources close to Trump had believed that a lawsuit would be threatened, but there was no mention of that, calling instead for a "meeting to discuss President Trump’s prompt reinstatement to the platform."

A spokesperson for Meta declined to comment, saying simply that the company "will announce a decision in the coming weeks in line with the process we laid out."

Trump was locked out of his Facebook and Twitter in January 2021, with the companies alleging that he incited the violence that resulted in protesters storming the Capitol building while Congress was certifying Biden's 2020 presidential victory.

The Facebook ban, enacted on January 7, 2021, was for an initial period of two years, after which it would come up for review.

The Twitter ban was stated to be permanent at the time, but since Elon Musk's takeover of the social media company, many previously banned accounts, including Trump's, were reinstated.

A Trump advisor who spoke anonymously with NBC News regarding the Facebook ban believes that the company will honor the two-year ban and reinstate his account.

"If Facebook wants to have this fight, fine, but the House is leverage, and keeping Trump off Facebook just looks political," the advisor said.

House Democrat Adam Schiff told Facebook that Trump should not be allowed back on the platform.

"Trump has continued to post harmful election content on Truth Social that would likely violate Facebook’s policies, and we have every reason to believe he would bring similar conspiratorial rhetoric back to Facebook, if given the chance," Schiff wrote in a letter to Meta, signed by three Democratic colleagues.
