President Donald Trump has revoked former Vice President and failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection. The revocation will go into effect on September 1, just weeks ahead of her upcoming book tour.

A letter reviewed by CNN, titled Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security and dated Thursday, stated, "You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris."

As a former vice president, Harris was entitled to six additional months of Secret Service protection upon leaving office. That period ended on July 21, however, a directive signed by then-President Joe Biden shortly before leaving office extended her Secret Service protection for an additional year.

Kirsten Allen, a senior advisor to Harris, told CNN, "The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety."

California Governor Gavin Newsom was reportedly briefed on the matter. Newsom spokesperson Bob Salladay told CNN, "The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses."

Harris, who is a Los Angeles resident, could potentially receive protection from the city’s police department. CNN reported, "Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Newsom were in touch Thursday evening about the situation."

Bass said, "This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearances and more. This puts the former Vice President in danger and I look forward to working with the Governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles."

The revoking of Harris’ Secret Service protection comes ahead of her upcoming book tour, which will begin in September. The tour will be about her new memoir 107 Days, which Harris described as a "behind-the-scenes account" of her failed presidential run.
